Book Design

Shown below are book cover designs for two different books.

One Hundred Years of Solitude

Inspired by the idea to create a "city of mirrors that shatters" from the book, the cover was created by shattering a mirror and taking pictures of the pieces in different layouts. The words themselves are laser cut clear acrylic that I then blended with the shattered mirror photograph in Photoshop. The tints of yellow come from the color of leaves from a tree, a symbolic part of the story.

A Man Called Ove

This book cover pulls from the stuggling main character, Ove. The story is set in a time when Ove is elderly but continuously tells of his past. Like his father, Ove was a woodworker which is what inspired the use of laser cut wood letters. The edges of the letters and white background are slightly burned because at one point in time, his house caught on fire. As the story progresses, we learn that some of his neighbors looked after him and eventually felt tied to him. So much so that they prevented Ove from hanging himself - both reasons for the composition of the book design and the use of yarn.
